SKF thrust ball bearings are manufactured as single direction (fig. 1) or double direction (fig. 2) thrust ball bearings. They are designed to accommodate axial loads only and must not be subjected to any radial load.

Bearing Features:

Double row deep groove ball bearings are very suitable for bearing arrangements where the load carrying capacity of a single row bearing is inadequate. Double row deep groove ball bearings are only available as open bearings (without seals or shields).

Features:

• SKF double row deep groove ball bearings are fitted with two snap-type, ball centred glass fibre reinforced PA66 cages (designation suffix TN9, fig. 2).

Polymers have significantly different properties than steel. Therefore, polymer ball bearings are typically used in applications where resistance to moisture or chemicals is essential and steel bearings cannot be used or only with certain restrictions. Both bearing designs have uninterrupted raceways and are non-separable. Standard bearings are only available as open bearings (without seals or shields).
Other polymer ball bearings and units (fig. 3) are available on request. Customized polymer bearings can be manufactured economically, even in small quantities. Integrated functions (e.g. gearing, specific shape of the bore) that can reduce the number of components and assembly costs are also possible. Compared with same-sized steel bearings, polymer ball bearings cannot accommodate the same heavy loads or high speeds and they do not have the same narrow operating clearance nor the same precise shaft positioning capability.

This type of ball bearing is recommended when alignment of the shaft and housing is difficult and the shaft may flex. The outer ring has a spherical raceway and its center of curvature coincides with that of the bearing; therefore, the axis of the inner ring, balls and cage can deflect to some extent around the bearing center. Pressed steel cages are usually used. Since the contact angle is small, the axial load capacity is low. The permissible dynamic misalignment is approximately 0.07 to 0.12 radian (4 to 7 degrees) under normal loads.

However, depending on the surrounding structure, such an angle may not be possible.

Four-point contact ball bearings are radial single row angular contact ball bearings with raceways that are designed to support axial loads in both directions. For a given axial load, a limited radial load can also be supported (Load ratio). The bearings are separable, i.e. the outer ring with ball and cage assembly can be mounted separately from the two inner ring halves.
Both inner ring halves of SKF Explorer four-point contact ball bearings have a recessed shoulder. This improves oil flow when the bearing is used in combination with an SKF cylindrical roller bearing (fig. 1). In addition, these recesses can be used to facilitate dismounting.
